You have spent months validating your idea. You have built a prototype. You have finally started driving traffic to your landing page. But then you look at the analytics and notice something concerning.
Users are bouncing.
They land on the page and leave almost immediately. You might assume the copy is bad or the value proposition is unclear. That is possible. However, there is a very real chance the problem is technical. It might be how your website feels to use.
This is where Core Web Vitals come in.
In the past, measuring website performance was vague. We used terms like fast or slow. Those are subjective. Google introduced Core Web Vitals to quantify the distinct elements of user experience. They are not just arbitrary numbers for developers to obsess over. They are specific metrics that mimic how a human being perceives the quality of your digital product.
For a founder, understanding these acronyms is not about learning to code. It is about understanding the friction points that might be silently killing your conversion rates.
Decoding the Three Pillars
#Core Web Vitals are currently composed of three specific measurements. Each one corresponds to a distinct phase of the user experience. Google considers these the baseline for a healthy website.
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)
This measures loading performance. But it is different from simply tracking how long it takes for the entire page to finish downloading.
LCP asks a simple question from the user’s perspective. When does the main thing on the screen actually show up? This is usually the hero image, the main video, or the headline text.
If you have ever stared at a white screen waiting for a website to populate, you were experiencing poor LCP. To provide a good user experience, LCP should occur within 2.5 seconds of when the page first starts loading.
First Input Delay (FID)
This measures interactivity. It quantifies the time from when a user first interacts with your page to the time when the browser is actually able to begin processing that interaction.
Think about clicking a “Sign Up” button. You click it, but nothing happens for a second. The interface feels frozen. That delay is the FID. It happens because the browser is busy doing something else, usually parsing heavy code files in the background.
For a startup trying to capture leads, a high FID is dangerous. It makes your application feel broken or sluggish. A good threshold to aim for is 100 milliseconds or less.
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)
This measures visual stability. This is often the most frustrating metric for users.
Imagine you are reading an article. You go to tap a link, but suddenly a banner ad loads at the top of the page. The entire text shifts down. You end up clicking the wrong button or losing your place entirely.
That movement is a layout shift. CLS looks at how much of the visible content shifted and the distance the elements moved. A good CLS score is 0.1 or less.
Core Web Vitals vs. Generic Page Speed
#It is common for non-technical founders to conflate Core Web Vitals with general page speed. They are related, but they are not the same thing.
Page speed is a broad umbrella term. It can refer to the time to the first byte, total download size, or server response time. You can have a site that technically loads data quickly but still fails Core Web Vitals.
For example, a site might load all its text instantly (fast speed). But then, two seconds later, a massive image pops in and pushes all that text down. That site has fast speed but a terrible CLS score.
Core Web Vitals are user-centric. They prioritize the perception of speed and stability over raw data transfer rates.
Another key distinction is the source of the data. You will often hear developers talk about “Lab Data” versus “Field Data.”
Lab Data is what happens when you run a test on your own computer. You simulate a user. It is a controlled environment.
Field Data is what Google actually cares about for ranking. This is data collected from real users visiting your site via the Chrome browser. If your users have slow phones or bad internet connections, your Field Data will reflect that.
This is why you cannot just rely on your developer saying the site works fast on their high-end laptop. You have to look at how it performs in the wild.
The Business Impact and Trade-offs
#Why should a startup with limited resources care about this? There are two primary reasons.
First is Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Google has explicitly stated that Core Web Vitals are a ranking factor. If you are in a competitive market, having a site that fails these checks can push you down the search results. You are essentially leaving free traffic on the table.
Second is user retention. There are countless studies linking performance to conversion. If your site shifts around (CLS) or feels unresponsive (FID), trust erodes. Users in a startup environment are often looking for reasons to say no. A buggy interface gives them that reason.
However, there is a nuance here.
Perfect scores should not always be the goal. Achieving a score of 100 on every metric often requires significant engineering time. That is time not spent building features or talking to customers.
This introduces a tension between design and performance. Your marketing team might want a high-resolution video background because it looks emotional and compelling. Your engineering team might flag that video as a disaster for LCP.
Who wins?
There is no single answer. Sometimes the brand impact of the video is worth the hit to the performance score. Sometimes the SEO traffic is more important than the fancy visual.

#As a founder, you do not need to fix the code yourself. You need to facilitate the conversation about quality.
Here are the unknowns you should explore with your team:
Are we measuring Field Data or just Lab Data? We need to know what real users are experiencing, not just what the test server says.
What is the cost of our current third-party scripts? Chat widgets, analytics trackers, and marketing pixels often destroy FID and LCP. Are we using all of them? Can any be removed?
How do we budget for performance? Should we set a “performance budget” where we agree not to add new features if they push our LCP over 2.5 seconds?
By asking these questions, you move performance from a technical checklist item to a strategic business decision. You ensure that as you build, you are not just adding code, but maintaining a usable, stable environment for the customers you worked so hard to acquire.
